Exploring the Aburi Region in Accra.
Nestled in the Eastern Region of Ghana, the Aburi area is a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich culture, and vibrant craftsmanship. In my opinion, this is a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Accra. Aburi offers a serene environment filled with lush greenery, breathtaking waterfalls, and an array of artisanal goods. The thing that struck me the most about Aburi, is how familiar it felt to me. It reminded me of the Blue Mountains in Jamaica, one of my favorite mountain getaways above Kingston.

Bonus points if you pull over to the side of the road and buy palm wine (an alcoholic beverage produced from the fermented sap of different species of palm trees) and drink from cups made from cassava shells.

Tucked away in the lush forest of the Eastern Region, the Asenema Waterfall is one of Aburi's hidden treasures. This waterfall, though lesser-known, provides a tranquil escape into nature. The journey to Asenema involves a very short scenic hike through verdant trails, where the sound of cascading water grows louder as you approach the falls. Once there, visitors are greeted by the towering sight of water tumbling down rocky cliffs into a shallow serene pool below. It’s a perfect spot for a refreshing dip, a picnic, or simply to soak in the natural beauty and tranquility.
Aburi Craft Market: A Hub of Artistry
No visit to Aburi is complete without a stop at the Aburi Craft Market. This market is a haven for art lovers and anyone interested in Ghanaian culture. I visited this market twice during my three-week visit to Accra and I loved how chill the vendors were. I wasn’t bum-rushed with pleas to buy and I could walk and shop in peace. The market is renowned for its wide variety of handmade crafts, including traditional Kente cloth, intricately carved wooden statues, vibrant paintings, and beautiful beadwork. Each item tells a story of Ghanaian heritage and the artisans’ skills. Strolling through the market, you’ll encounter friendly vendors eager to share the history and significance behind their creations. Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or a gift, the Aburi Craft Market is the perfect place to find something special.
Aburi Botanical Gardens: Nature’s Paradise
Established in 1890, the Aburi Botanical Gardens are a lush oasis spread over 160 acres. These gardens are not only a botanical wonder but also a place of historical significance. Initially created as a sanatorium for convalescing colonial administrators, the gardens have evolved into a tourist attraction and a place for locals to relax with their families. Visitors to the gardens can enjoy a leisurely walk among towering trees, vibrant flowers, and meticulously landscaped lawns. The gardens feature a variety of plant species, including indigenous and exotic trees, medicinal plants, and ornamental flowers. Notable attractions within the gardens include the centuries-old Kapok tree, a large rusty helicopter, the picturesque palm-lined avenue, and the beautiful bamboo grove. The serene atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for relaxation, picnics, and photography.
