Eating London

London's vibrant culinary scene offers a multitude of gastronomic delights, from refined afternoon teas to bustling local markets. Despite all of these palate pleasures, I tend to have a very Jamaican experience when I am in London. The majority of my family lives there. My father’s mother moved from Jamaica to London in the 1950s and is part of the Windrush Generation. On my visits, I am always plied with ackee and saltfish, curry goat and Satdeh soup. I can cook all of this at home.

This time, I was more intentional about what I wanted to eat, especially since Kelly and I were filming the London episode of The WTAF Show.

High Tea at Langham Hotel

A crisp bottle of Tattinger complemented the cheese sandwiches and clotted cream

Nestled in the heart of London, the Langham Hotel offers a quintessentially British experience with its renowned high tea. The grandeur of the Palm Court, with its elegant decor and refined atmosphere, sets the stage for an afternoon of indulgence. The tea selection is extensive, featuring rare blends that cater to both traditionalists and adventurers. We actually skipped the tea for the champagne option, and it was delightful.

The finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and delicate pastries are executed with precision and flair. Each bite is a testament to the hotel's commitment to quality and tradition. The service is impeccable, with staff who are both knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring that every guest feels pampered. The high tea at the Langham is more than just a meal; it's an experience that transports you to a world of elegance and charm.

Sunday Brunch at Rose and Crown, Clapham

The Rose and Crown in Clapham is a cozy, inviting pub that transforms its rustic space into a brunch haven every Sunday. The menu is a delightful mix of hearty British classics and contemporary dishes, perfect for a leisurely weekend meal. The full English breakfast is a standout, featuring perfectly cooked eggs, crispy bacon, and rich sausages, complemented by fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast. Their show-stopping Yorkshire puddings top hearty plates of roasted chicken, pork and beef smothered on velvety gravy.

For those seeking something lighter, the avocado toast with poached eggs and a hint of chili offers a modern twist. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a mix of locals and visitors enjoying the relaxed vibe. The friendly staff and the well-curated drinks menu, including fresh juices and craft beers, enhance the overall experience. Sunday brunch at the Rose and Crown is a comforting, satisfying start to the day.

Chiswick Cheese Market

The Chiswick Cheese Market is a treasure trove for cheese enthusiasts and food lovers alike. Held monthly, this market showcases an impressive array of artisanal cheeses from local and international producers. I was pleased to meet, Kristina, the food stylist and recipe developer of Hide My Veggies. We joined her in her weekly shop for a tomato pasta dish. We meandered between stalls and sampled our way through the market, chatting with vendors who took immense pride in their products.

The stalls are brimming with varieties that cater to all palates, from creamy Bries and tangy Cheddars to robust Blues and unique goat cheeses. The vendors are passionate and knowledgeable, often offering samples and sharing the stories behind their products. Beyond cheese, the market also features complementary items like freshly baked bread, charcuterie, crackers, balsamic vinegar and preserves, making it a perfect spot for assembling a gourmet picnic or stocking up on gourmet essentials. The lively, community-focused atmosphere adds to the charm, making the Chiswick Cheese Market not just a shopping trip, but a delightful culinary adventure.
